Precision is not a machine label
Precision machining achieves drawing-defined dimensions, geometry and surfaces through a controlled process. Using CNC does not by itself guarantee a particular tolerance. Material condition, component size, workholding, tool access and measurement method must be reviewed together.
This guide complements the tolerance guide by focusing on production and acceptance planning rather than numerical tolerance tables. For new shafts, bushings, flanges, manifolds and fixture parts, identifying critical features before quotation reduces later differences in interpretation.
Separate these requirements on the drawing
A bearing diameter within its size limits does not prove acceptable runout relative to another seat. Likewise, a shiny appearance is not evidence that a specified roughness has been achieved. Define acceptance criteria separately.
- ✓Size: the acceptance range for diameter, length or width.
- ✓Geometry: form, orientation and location requirements, with a datum system where needed.
- ✓Surface: the specified roughness parameter and the surfaces it applies to.
- ✓Final condition: heat treatment, hardness, coating and the production stage for measurement.
Select the process for the critical feature
Turning can produce rotational features, while milling creates pockets and multiple faces. Bores may need additional finishing for diameter and surface requirements. Grinding can be considered for heat-treated bearing seats and honing for suitable bores. Plan finishing allowances for dimensional changes after coating or heat treatment.
EDM and laser processes require separate technical review for specific geometries and materials; they do not use the same mechanism as conventional cutting tools. Mentioning them here does not imply availability at every size. Required processes and capacity are confirmed during quotation.
Plan inspection with the component
Choose the measurement method for the feature: suitable micrometers and bore equipment for dimensions, coordinate measurement for geometric relationships, and profile or surface equipment for relevant characteristics. Display resolution alone is not measurement accuracy. Define equipment suitability and required calibration records in the inspection plan.
First-article inspection, batch sampling and 100% inspection have different scopes. Agree which features are measured, their frequency, report format and final acceptance stage before quotation. For thin-walled or long parts, restraint and measurement conditions also matter.
