Machining creates the required geometry by removing material from a blank in a controlled way. CNC provides numerical control of tool movements. A component's suitability still depends on workholding, tool access, operation sequence and inspection, not merely on using a CNC machine.
The starting blank may be bar, plate, casting or forging. Prototypes benefit from flexibility; repeat orders place more emphasis on process consistency, tool life and inspection records. Batch size and material-removal volume affect the economics of the selected route.
Select the process by geometry
Broaching, planing and shaping are also material-removal processes used for particular profiles and geometries. Describing a process here does not imply automatic availability for every part or capacity. Required operations are confirmed in the quotation.
✓Turning: rotational diameters, faces, grooves and threads on shafts, pins, bushings and flanges.
✓Milling: pockets, flat faces, contours, wrench flats and hole patterns on different faces.
✓Drilling and bore finishing: depth, diameter tolerance and surface requirements determine whether drilling, boring, reaming or honing is appropriate.
✓Grinding: a possible finishing route for heat-treated bearing diameters, precise bores and flat datum surfaces.
From drawing to final inspection
The sequence is part-specific. Heat treatment may be followed by finish turning or grinding; if a coating affects dimensions, define acceptance dimensions after coating. The inspection plan should cover these transitions.
✓1. Confirm drawing revision, material condition, quantities and critical features.
✓2. Select blank dimensions, datum faces, workholding and roughing sequence.
✓3. Where heat treatment or coating is specified, plan for distortion and finishing allowances.
✓4. Complete final dimensions, surfaces, deburring and cleaning; inspect the agreed characteristics.
✓5. Prepare requested inspection records and material documents with suitable protective packaging for dispatch.
Three practical component examples
A shaft may combine turned diameters, a milled keyway and finished bearing seats in one manufacturing plan. Diameter tolerance alone is not enough: datum relationships and runout between bearing seats also matter.
A hydraulic manifold combines face milling, intersecting passages and connection threads. Internal deburring and cleanliness acceptance can be critical. If pressure or leak testing is required, its conditions must be defined separately.
A flange or ring may require turning, bolt-circle machining and sealing-face inspection. Thin sections can deform under clamping, so the drawing should clarify whether dimensions are assessed in the free state.
What affects cost and lead time?
Setup count, tool access, deep holes, thin walls, material condition and inspection scope affect time. Identify functional features instead of assigning tight tolerances to every surface. Machining is not always the cheapest or fastest route; alternative blank forms can be compared for the quantity and design.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can turning and milling be used on one part?
Yes. Rotational diameters and flat or pocketed features can use different operations. Workholding and datum relationships should be planned together.
Is drilling enough to finish every hole?
No. Diameter, accuracy and surface requirements may call for boring, reaming, grinding or honing.
Is a 3D model enough for a quote?
A model supports geometry review. A drawing or explicit specification is also needed for tolerances, material, surfaces and acceptance requirements.
Does a prototype use the same process as series production?
Not always. Higher quantities may justify different fixtures, tooling and operation plans. Agree first-article inspection and change approval before the transition.
