What does an expanding pin do?

Expanding pin systems expand within a bore to assist location or retention, depending on their design. Some arrangements combine a central member with split sleeves. The pin body, sleeve and actuator may be separate components; a product name alone is not enough for quotation—include the assembly drawing.

An expanding pin is not automatically interchangeable with a solid dowel or spring pin in function or load capacity. This page concerns new pins and mating components made to approved drawings, not the repair of existing bores.

Define the component scope

Turning, milling, slot production and finishing are reviewed against the geometry. Material, heat treatment and surface requirements follow the customer drawing; a universal hardness, tightening torque or expansion range is not proposed without the application details.

  • Pin body: diameters, shoulders, threads and assembly interfaces.
  • Split sleeve: bore-to-outer-diameter relationship, slot geometry and final condition.
  • Collet and connection components: draw elements, contact surfaces and mating parts.

Fixture and assembly applications

Locating fixtures, assembly tools and interchangeable tooling may need bore-based referencing. Suitability depends on mating-bore size, contact length, material, operating cycles and load direction. Naming an industry does not establish approval of a component for that industry.

Separate locating, clamping and load-carrying functions in the assembly specification. A dimensional report alone does not validate mechanism life or load capacity. Agree functional tests and acceptance criteria with the design authority.

What to include for quotation and inspection

Send CNC-Turkey part drawings and an assembly section for new pins, sleeves or collet components. State whether you need individual parts or matched sets. Include material condition, quantities, finishing, critical dimensions and delivery country. Manufacturability and required processes are confirmed after technical review.

  • Mating-bore dimensions and datum surfaces
  • Features to inspect in free and working conditions
  • Slot, deburring and contact-surface acceptance criteria
  • Required measurement report and any functional-test scope

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same as a standard dowel?

No. The expanding arrangement and mating bore work together. Interchangeability needs technical review.

Can I order sleeves only?

Individual components can be reviewed to drawing. Share the interface dimensions of mating parts as well.

Do you specify the tightening torque?

No value is given without an approved design and operating conditions. Assembly instructions and validation scope are agreed with the design authority.

Is this a worn-bore repair service?

This page covers new component manufacturing, not repair or refurbishment of existing bores.
