A CNC prototype order typically covers between 1 and 5 parts, sometimes up to 10. Its purpose is to validate the design, test assembly fit or present a physical sample for customer approval — before series production begins.
The distinction between prototype and series is not just about quantity. Production setup, inspection scope and documentation requirements also differ. Understanding these differences helps you set the right expectations with your supplier.
Prototype vs Series Production: The Key Differences
In prototype production, fixtures and tooling are typically arranged with standard solutions, which increases setup flexibility but raises unit cost. In series production, optimised workholding and setup solutions significantly reduce per-unit cost.

Why Is Prototype Unit Cost Higher?
The unit cost of a CNC part is largely determined by how many parts the setup and programming cost is spread across. In prototype orders, these fixed costs are spread over 1–5 parts; in series production they are distributed over hundreds or thousands. This is why prototype unit price can be 3–10× higher than series unit price.
Practical tip: if design changes are likely during the prototype phase, keep material and surface finish requirements as close as possible to series targets. This reduces re-validation requirements when transitioning from prototype to series.
First Article Inspection: The Bridge from Prototype to Series
First Article Inspection (FAI) verifies that the production process is delivering parts conforming to the drawing before series production begins. A typical FAI report includes all dimensional measurements, material certificate, surface roughness readings and, where applicable, heat-treatment or coating documentation.
Request FAI at the quotation stage and clarify requirements. The required dimensional inspection method (conventional equipment or CMM), the number of tolerances to be measured and the report format directly affect the manufacturer's price and lead time.
Planning the Transition from Prototype to Series
When moving from an approved prototype to a series order, follow these steps: confirm the design is frozen, clarify quantity and delivery schedule, request a new quotation for the series unit price, and confirm that the FAI-approved production process will be maintained.
The most common strategy for CNC part sourcing from Turkey is: send 2–5 prototypes by air freight (3–7 days to Europe), then once the design is approved, place the first series order of 50–500 pieces by sea freight (10–15 days to Europe). This approach combines fast validation with low logistics cost.
