1.4305 (303) is widely used for general-purpose stainless parts due to its free-machining characteristics.
1.4404 (316L) is specified for chemical and medical applications due to its weldability and enhanced corrosion resistance.

Challenges in stainless steel CNC machining
Stainless steel requires special attention in CNC machining due to its lower thermal conductivity, higher work-hardening tendency and more intense cutting forces compared to carbon steel. These properties directly affect cutting parameters, tooling selection and cooling strategy.
Austenitic stainless steels such as 1.4404 and 1.4435 exhibit more pronounced work-hardening than 1.4305. For this reason, tool geometry, cutting speed and cooling approach are evaluated for these grades at the quotation stage.
Surface finish and tolerances for stainless steel parts
Ra 1.6 µm is the standard value for a machined surface in stainless steel. For hygiene or corrosion requirements, lower Ra values (Ra 0.8 or below) can be specified; this may require additional machining operations or polishing.
For dimensional tolerances, ISO 2768-m is the standard starting point for general engineering parts. For critical fits and precision components, IT7 tolerances can be achieved in stainless steel with appropriate process planning.

EN 10204 3.1 material certificates can be supplied when requested and agreed during quotation. Source, form, dimensions and purchase conditions affect availability.
What if CMM inspection or a detailed dimensional report is required?
Dimensional inspection uses suitable conventional measuring equipment. Where CMM inspection, detailed dimensional reports or third-party verification are required, these services can be coordinated through a qualified measurement network.
