The short answer

Gun drilling is generally used for smaller deep holes, while BTA is used for larger diameters and higher chip volumes. Diameter alone does not decide the process; length-to-diameter ratio, material, straightness, entry condition and required surface must be reviewed together.

Coolant and chip evacuation

In gun drilling, coolant travels through the tool to the cutting edge and chips return along an external V-flute. In BTA/STS, coolant is pumped around the drill tube to the cut; chips and fluid return through the tube. The internal return path suits larger chip volumes.

Straightness and drift

Both methods can make long holes, but neither makes a perfectly self-correcting bore. Entry face, guidance, tool condition, material uniformity and length-to-diameter ratio affect drift. The permitted axis deviation and inspection method should be stated on the drawing.

When does honing follow?

Deep-hole drilling creates the bore. When final diameter, cylindricity or surface requirements are tighter than the drilled result, controlled stock is left and honing follows. At CNC Turkey the bore is drilled with the standard BTA tool closest to the final size within Ø30–110 mm, and honing brings it to final size.

Why we offer BTA only

Our deep-hole capacity is BTA Ø30–110 mm, up to 4000 mm in one pass. Small-diameter gun drilling below Ø30 mm is outside our range. We state that boundary so drawings are screened for the right process.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are BTA and gun drilling the same?

No. Coolant and chip paths differ, as does the diameter range each process generally suits.

Which process is used for smaller diameters?

Gun drilling generally suits smaller diameters and BTA larger diameters. The exact choice depends on geometry and specification.

Does CNC Turkey offer gun drilling?

No. We offer BTA Ø30–110 mm only; below Ø30 mm is outside our range.

Can a BTA-drilled bore be honed?

Yes. Suitable stock is planned for final size and surface. Our honing capacity is up to Ø300 × 2000 mm.
